I’ve found that when most people ask this question, there’s a hidden personal pronoun in it. It usually is “Why do [you God, let…] bad things happen to people? It’s an accusation we bring to God, sometimes because we don’t understand, but most usually when we are experiencing an acute pain in our life…a relational hurt; a physical problem or illness; maybe even a painful circumstance, like being falsely accused, blamed, fired, or generally put upon.

You get the idea. Now, let’s take the most gut-wrenching example, the death of a child, and see if together we can’t make better sense of why God would allow the bad to exist.

Why would God allow that? Why would God allow a child to lose his or her little life? From God’s perspective, that life is not lost. God is able to restore to that child their life, so no loss is suffered on the part of the child. Life is not lost to the One who can restore it.

What about the grief that parents and family experience? In our loss, the presence of God is available for us to experience His strength, His comfort, His sustaining love and assurance in the face of the evil that exists. God sustains those who grieve for those He calls to Himself.

What about the skeptics, who wonder how a loving God could allow such a thing? The taking home of a child to be with God can awaken in the most hardened of skeptics the moral reality of God. In asking “How could you God?”, it presupposes a moral authority who chooses the “hows” of life, the “hows” that it works by.

So whether it’s the child, family or skeptic…all have a witness of the reality of God. The existence of evil points to the reality of a God who can overcome even the bad. And we’d want no less a God.

My hope is that in asking this question, you will find His the comfort of His presence breaking through the hurt to reveal the love of His Son Jesus right where you are.

When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden, God gave them skins to cover up with (Genesis 3:21). To get those skins, some animal had to die. In other words, God sacrificed an animal to cover their sin. From the beginning, God has declared the payment for sin is death, and so blood must be shed to cover sin:

- Leviticus 17:11: “For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.”

- Hebrews 9:22: “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”

We could shed our own blood for our own sins, but that wouldn’t do us much good because then we’d be dead. God doesn’t want us dead—he wants us alive. But that leaves him with a great dilemma: we each have sinned and must die for our sins, so how can we live?

God devised a plan. Early in the Old Testament God introduced the idea of one innocent being shedding its blood in place of the sinner’s. After the incident in the garden, he introduced the sacrificial system in the Tabernacle-Temple ceremonies. That’s what those sacrifices were all about: “He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him” (Leviticus 1:4).

However the solution of sacrificing bulls and goats and lambs for the sins of each person’s sin was a temporary fix. The next year, another animal would have to be sacrificed for the same person. A more permanent solution was needed.

That meant a human was needed to die for humans’ sin. But all humans are sinful, so another sin-filled person dying for us just wouldn’t work. A human without sin was needed.

But ever since Adam, every human born is sin-filled, so how could a sinless man happen? The only way was if God did it Himself.

So he did.

God became a man, known as Jesus—whose name, Joshua in Hebrew, means “the LORD saves” (1)—and died for us in our place. Therefore, anyone who accepts the sacrifice of Jesus on his or her behalf is covered by his blood and is saved.

Buddha didn’t die for us. Mohammad didn’t die for us. Name any other god and whoever you name, they 1.) weren’t sinless, and 2.) didn’t die for us.

Only Jesus satisfies God’s requirement of a perfect, sinless person who was sacrificed in our stead. Therefore, Jesus is the only way.

What is the relevancy of the Cross of Jesus Christ? What does it matter that Christ died on a Cross and rose from the dead over two thousand years ago? How does His Cross add any value to my life and to who I am and to who I want to be?” Perhaps it’s a question you’re asked yourself or someone else and never received an answer that you considered to be satisfactory. If that’s the case, T.D. Jakes will answer your question once and for all, but not in the way you might be expecting. As a master storyteller and powerful biblical expositor, the Bishop shines a light on how the tragic Fall of mankind blocked access to eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross, opening the way to receive God’s abundant life through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

Discover the Savior’s passion as expressed through the Old Testament Passover that must be experienced before one can receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in power!
